Who’s Afraid of the
Big Bad Boogie Man?
By
Linda Clements-Urick, C.Ht., MTI, CNLP
As you stand
before the audience, you feel everyone staring at you. Your mouth
grows dry and you clear your throat, buying a little more time
before you begin. With the first words out of your mouth, your
voice cracks, sounding weak and scared. You look out and see an
ocean of people with the expectation of being entertained,
informed, inspired or motivated by YOU.
Your heart is
racing, your palms begin to sweat, breathing is difficult, your
knees are like jello, your head is pounding. The Boogie Man is on
your heels and you want to wake up and discover that it was all a
bad dream.
Fear, panic,
anxiety; we use many names, but the symptoms and sensations
experienced are similar and can be debilitating.
It has the
capacity to destroy careers, stop us from meeting the right mate
and prevent us from living life to the fullest.
Desensitization
is a powerful tool that can, in many cases, completely remove the
fear of spiders, snakes, crowds etc. Since the subconscious mind
does not distinguish between what is really happening and what it
imagines to be happening, repeated mental exposure to the fear
object in a clinical setting, is highly effective in lowering or
even extinguishing the fear altogether.
Another useful
technique for diminishing fears and anxieties is Emotional
Freedom Technique or EFT. EFT is a form of a larger
genre called Energy Psychology. It helps to rebalance the body’s
energy system through a series of “taps” to the meridian end
points of the body. It is similar to acupuncture, but without the
needles. Virtually any negative emotion can be brought to a
manageable state, and can often be eliminated altogether, with
this easy-to-learn technique.
Some of the
negative emotions that can be neutralized with EFT are: guilt,
anger, disappointment, grief, self-doubt, resentment, anxiety,
fear, stress and jealousy. Many practitioners have also had
success with eliminating or greatly reducing pain and other
physical problems using EFT. To learn more about it, go to www.emofree.com.
Relaxation
techniques, yoga, meditation and
self-hypnosis are all viable, natural methods of getting your
fears and anxieties under control and are readily accessible in
most parts of the country or easily learned through books, CD’s
and DVD’s.
Whether your fear
is of heights, public speaking, water, social situations, spiders
or failure, you can conquer it. Whether it has haunted you for
most of your life or is something recent, you can change it. The
tools are within your reach and they work.
Don’t let fear
make you a victim. A well-trained, seasoned professional can teach
you to exercise your mind in a way that creates dramatic results.
Learn to successfully reprogram those limiting beliefs and
responses in only a few short weeks. Wake up, and discover that
the Boogie Man no longer exists.
